Appeal to stop sale of clothes having Hindu deity pictures, ‘Om’ and Yoga designs

January 12, 2016 Pousha Shukla Paksha Tritiya, Kaliyug Varsh 5117

We at Forum for Hindu Awakening (FHA) have received several complaints from devout Hindus regarding the sale of various clothing items having the revered Hindu Deity Shri Ganesh and sacred syllable ‘Om’ printed on them and also use of Yoga Asanas (poses) printed imperfectly on SunFrog shopping portal: https://www.sunfrog.com/search/?cId=0&cName=&search=yoga

Upon reviewing the complaints, FHA team immediately appealed to the SunFrog customer service team requesting them to remove the denigrating apparel from the shopping portal. In the appeal, FHA explained that printing of the revered Hindu Deity Shri Ganesh, the Hindu sacred symbol “Om” loosely on apparels and use of Yoga Asanas (poses) unscientifically for increasing sales and profit are not only hurting the sentiments of Hindus but also setting a wrong precedence for others to follow unrighteousness and sadly society will be deprived from knowing the importance and significance of the Hindu symbols and Yoga sutra traditions.

The FHA team has not received any response from SunFrog customer team. Consequently, FHA now requests all readers to appeal against this appalling denigration peacefully and lawfully by either writing an email or calling the numbers below requesting them to remove the offending items from their www.sunfrogshirts.com shopping portal.

Namaskar,

We at Forum for Hindu Awakening (FHA) have received several complaints from devout Hindus regarding the sale of various clothing items having the revered Hindu Deity Shri Ganesh and sacred syllable ‘Om’ printed on them and also use of Yoga Asanas (poses) printed sloppily on your shopping portal: https://www.sunfrog.com/search/?cId=0&cName=&search=yoga

We have reviewed the shopping portal for the above mentioned items which includes Chakras, Yoga Tee shirts, Om Tee shirts, Hoodies, etc. and would like to bring to your attention how these designs are denigrating Hindu Deity, the sacred Hindu symbol of worship and Hindu Yoga traditions. There is spiritual significance for chanting the mantras and the divine symbol ‘Om’. There is spiritual energy associated with chanting of these mantras and performing Yoga Asanas which helps a seeker to progress spiritually.

As per Hinduism, ‘Om’ is one of the most primordial spiritual symbols. It refers to Atman (soul) and Brahman (divinity). The syllable is often found at the beginning and the end of the chapters in the Vedas, the Upanishads, and other Hindu holy scriptures. It is a sacred spiritual incantation made before and during the recitation of spiritual texts, during puja (ritualistic worship) and prayers, in ceremonies such as weddings, and even performing spiritual practice such as Yoga. The ultimate aim of Yoga is Moksha (liberation) and has many facets in Hindu philosophy. But when Asanas are designed for fashion in a spiritually unscientific way, it dilutes Adhyatma vidya (Inner Science) of Yoga and the Yoga Sutras of ‘Patanjali’ which are a universal teaching to humankind.

Using the revered Hindu deity, Shri Ganesh and Hindu sacred symbol, ’Om’ loosely on apparel as artwork is not only hurting the sentiments of Hindus but also trivializing them. This will set a wrong example for others and society will unknowingly be a part of this denigration of Hindu Deities and symbols. To explain more, once the clothes are used, the soiled and worn out items will be thrown into a dustbin and from there they will eventually end up in a civic dumping ground, resulting in the denigration of the revered deity and holy Hindu symbols. Thus, the sanctity of Shri Ganesh and ‘Om’ will not be maintained and preserved during these practices. Hindus treat their divine and holy symbols with utmost reverence. Thus, having sacred symbols displayed anywhere else like on clothes and accessories amounts to denigration of Hinduism and insulting to millions of Hindus across the world. The commercialization of Yoga and sacred symbols is a cheap way to boost sales.

We urge you to consider the above points and remove the various denigrating items listed above, which are not in accordance with Hinduism from your website. We stress that our aim in bringing up these points is to educate and ensure that Hindu Deities and Hinduism gets accurately represented in society. Hinduism has been misrepresented at many levels. Though it is an ancient tradition, Hinduism has a lot to offer the modern world and we want children and adults alike to be able to understand and study it without it being misrepresented. You can take one step towards ensuring that Hindu sacrosanct symbols and Hinduism does not get disrespected by removing the denigrating listings from your website.
