Pakistan: Hindu Marriage Bill to be final soon

KARACHI: Sindh government on Tuesday constituted a five-member committee to review and finalise the draft of proposed Hindu Marriage Bill to protect Hindu girls from alleged forced conversion and marriages.

Former judge of the Supreme Court Justice (retd) Rana Bhagwandas will head the committee. Former judge of Sindh High Court Justice (retd) Majida Rizwi, and a local lawyer, Jhamat Mal will also be the members of this committee. Government will also nominate two MPAs of the Sindh Assembly as members of the committee.

The decision was taken at a high level meeting held at Sindh Assembly. Sindh Law Minister Dr Sikandar Mandhro presided over the meeting. Elected MPAs of the PPP, MQM and PML-F, and representatives of the civil society also participated in the meeting.

Later, talking to the media persons, the law minister said that the provincial government wants to do legislation on forced Hindu marriages issue in consultation with all parliamentary parties and lawmakers belonging to minorities. He said that the committee will review the draft of ‘Hindu Marriages Bill’ and submit a final draft bill to the Sindh government. staff report
