Appeal against denigration of Hindu Deities via Music and Artwork by hip hop musician MC Yogi

August 23, 2015 (Shravan Shukla paksha Ashtami, Kaliyug Varsh 5117)

We at Forum for Hindu Awakening (FHA) have received several complaints from devout Hindus regarding contentious and non Dharmik way of promoting Hinduism and Hindu Philosophy through music, Yoga and artwork on the website http://www.mcyogi.com/ by hip hop musician MC Yogi and on his personal Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/MCYogi108.

Upon reviewing the complaints, the FHA team immediately wrote an appeal letter addressed to MC Yogi and his organizers requesting them to stop writing, performing and selling the insulting and derogatory hip hop songs targeted at revered Hindu Deities such as Lord Shiv, Shri Ganesh, Devi Parvati, Shri Laxmi and Shri Hanuman. The letter explained how denigration occurs through hip hop songs which are not according to Hindu Shaastra (spiritual science as per the Hindu scriptures). In addition, the letter also appealed to stop using Hindu Deities and integrating Them with western philosophy in a slandering and corruptive manner via music, artwork designs and Yoga practices for commercial business ventures.

Forum for Hindu Awakening (FHA) team has not received any response from MC Yogi or his management team. Therefore, FHA requests all devout readers to appeal against this denigration of revered Hindu Deities peacefully and lawfully by either writing an email or calling the numbers listed below requesting them to stop selling such derogatory music and artwork.

Namaskar,

We at Forum for Hindu Awakening (FHA) have received several complaints from devout Hindus regarding your debatable and contentious way of promoting Hinduism and Hindu Philosophy through music, Yoga and artwork on your website http://www.mcyogi.com/ and your personal Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/MCYogi108.

Forum for Hindu Awakening (FHA) is a nonprofit organization that strives to awaken society to the unique spiritual science behind Hindu Dharma concepts and practices, to motivate people to live and preserve them, and to facilitate the spiritual progress of humanity. One of the ways we do this is by addressing misrepresentations of Hinduism and campaigning against malpractices done in the name of Hindu Dharma. For further details please refer to our website http://forumforhinduawakening.org/.

We are writing this appeal to notify you that your personal website, www.mcyogi.com contains many hip hop songs targeted at revered Hindu Deities such as Lord Shiv, Shri Ganesh, Devi Parvati, Shri Laxmi and Shri Hanuman. We would like to bring to your immediate attention that your music is inspired and based on various revered Hindu Deities which is not in accordance with the Hindu Shaastra (spiritual science as per the Hindu scriptures). In fact, few of the songs’ lyrics actually denigrate the Hindu Deities including Lord Shiv, Shri Ganesh, Devi Parvati, Shreekrushna and Shri Hanuman.

To illustrate, most of your songs published on website http://www.mcyogi.com/lyrics/ are not only superficially presented in hip hop style but also denigrate revered Hindu Deities.

  1. We commend you for your aspiration and dedication to promote Shri Ganesh songs. But your songs such as ‘Ganesh is Fresh’, ‘Elephant Power’, regarding Shri Ganesh are in reality misrepresenting and denigrating Shri Ganesh. Hindus worship Shri Ganesh before commencing any ritual or an auspicious act. He is called the ‘Remover of obstacles’, ‘Remover of unhappiness’ (Vighnaharta, Dukhhaharta), etc. If He is trivialized and ridiculed in songs calling Him as ‘elephant power’s unstoppable’ without understanding the true essence, then how would He shower His grace and blessings!
  1. Your song, ‘Om Namah Shivaya’, misrepresents Lord Shiva. The lyrics of this song not only create a fictional image of Lord Shiva but also malign Him. Lord Shiva is depicted in an eccentric form and identified as ‘God of the Dead’ which is untrue and trivializes Lord Shiva.
  1. In addition, your lyrics about Shri Hanuman is humiliating to devout Hindus when you try to compare his deeds with Hollywood action movies and incorrectly portray Him as the best friend of Deity, Shriram, but in the real sense even today, Shree Hanuman’s devotion unto Shriram is cited as an example of dasyabhakti (one of the nine types of devotion, an attitude of servitude). He was ever ready to sacrifice His life for His master!

You also believe that Yoga and Hip hop culture is the same! But in reality the ultimate goal of Yoga is Moksha (liberation) and has many facets in Hindu philosophy and practices. When you try to find the similarities in both, you are diluting Hindu Yoga traditions and the Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali’s holistic teachings to humanity.

We urge you to consider the above points and remove the various denigrating songs and their lyrics listed above, which are not in accordance with Hinduism from your website. Please stop using Hindu Deities and integrating them with western ideologies in a denigrating and corruptive manner via music, artwork designs and Yoga practices for commercial business ventures. We stress that our aim in bringing up these points is to educate and ensure that Hindu Deities and Hinduism gets accurately represented in society. Hinduism has been misrepresented at many levels. Though it is an ancient tradition, Hinduism has a lot to offer the modern world and we want children and adults alike to be able to understand and study it without it being misrepresented. You can take one step towards ensuring that Hindu Deities and Hinduism do not get disrespected by removing the denigrating materials from your website.

Awaiting your prompt action and reply.

Sincerely,
Forum for Hindu Awakening
