Shri Swaminarayan Hindu Temple

Downers Grove, IL —

The Shri Swaminarayan Mandir Hindu Temple is a place of worship for the Hindu religion, as well as a historical and educational site. Visitors can view traditional Indian architecture and modern technology inside the temple, which was built in a total of 16 months  — a significantly short amount of time to build a temple. The building was designed according to the ancient canons of India, known as the Shilpa-Shastras. Here, visitors will learn about the culture of India and about the rites, rituals and values of Hinduism. The temple is open to the general public from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, while special features and monuments are open from 9 a.m. to 10:15 a.m., 11:15 a.m. to noon and 4 to 6 p.m. daily. During the free guided tours — which are available by appointment only — visitors will view presentations, learn about the carving of the temple and attend an 8-minute prayer service which will be explained after the tour.
