Subject: Gay weddings at Sussex UK temple

||Shree||

Namaste Dear Temple Authorities,

We have learned recently, that a Hindu Temple at Sussex, UK (Apple Tree Centre, Ifield Avenue) is granting marriage license to same-sex weddings. Please refer to Same-sex couples can now marry at Hindu temple in Ifield

We would like to bring a few points to your attention in this regard.

As you know, in Hinduism Vivah (Marriage) is one of the sanskar of 16 sanskar in life. This sanskar is to be performed on a Man and a woman.

As per Hindu Dharma there are four purusharthas (pursuits of life): Dharma, Arth, Kaam, and Moksha. In this Kaam is not just sex; it is for prajotpadan (To retain birth cycle). Kaam must be done with Dharma. Artha also must be done with Dharma. That is following the Righteous code of conduct.

None of this can be achieved by same-sex marriages in Hindu Context.

As per Hindu scriptures Shiva (Male) & Shakti (Female) are two forms and have Natural attraction to become one. That is why female called Ardhangini. Marriage means uniting two principles; i.e. the principles of Lord Shiva in the form of the husband and the principle of Goddess Parvati as His wife.

As per Bhagwadgeeta: Vivah is not to get involved in it, but to get evolved.

Generally speaking the purpose of marriage as declared in the sankalpa done before the ritual of kanya-dana is

Praja – offspring for the liberation of the ancestors
Sahatva – companionship
Karma – performing of social and religious duties for the benefit of society and the world.

During the ritual of Kanyadan the bride’s father says to the groom, “with the five elements and the Deities as my witness I give to you this good looking, healthy and bejeweled girl, thinking you are like Shri Vishnu, in the desire to attain Brahmalok (the abode of Lord Brahma) and also for the salvation of my ancestors”. And the groom replies, “I accept this girl for the perpetuation of Righteousness and progeny.”

A Hindu Temple’s function is to impart divine knowledge from our Holy Scriptures. Community and people in the community look at temples as authority on Hindu concepts and knowledge. However when Temple authorities say, “Times have changed and we need to change with it”, it becomes mockery of our Vedic culture. Change is good and inevitable with changing time, but at the same time we do not want to pass on incorrect message to Hindu Community and Young kids who come to the temple; where they see that the temple is indulged in the activities, which are contradictory to our Holy Scriptures and customs.

We think Apple Tree Centre temple management has taken some incorrect steps in this case, without giving much thought to it.

We have nothing against LGBT community and we respect them as they are.

However same-sex marriage in Hindu Temple is denigration of Hindu Custom.

Hoping to preserve the glorious Hindu Dharma with you in the coming future.

Humbly,
Nilesh Shirodkar
